Scottish Lothian Border Lowlands

Over the Border

Edinburgh and Glasgow on the Firth of Forth and the Clyde River with Stirling in between was the most industrialised area of Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries.

It was also route of the fight to remain independent from England, a struggle which went on for centuries after it was thought to be settled in 1327 when Robert the Bruce’s triumphant victory at Bannockburn.

It offers a host of castles and stately homes steeped with the history of the power struggle in the borders, with both the capital Edinburgh and Glasgow offering wealth of culture for the visitor.

The river Clyde flows for over 100miles from the border hills through the Lanark Gorge over the Falls of Clyde, a number of waterfalls with over 200 feet high. The power of the gorge was harnessed by the 19th century industrialist Robert Owen to drive the cotton mills of New Lanark.

The mills have been renovated and house an impressive museum to the cotton industry and the foundation principles of industrial socialism, on which he ran the New Lanark Mills remaining profitable and competitive.

A full day can be spent at New Lanark Mills with a woodland walk to the Falls of Clyde, it also has a quality hotel housed in one of the original warehouses for those wishing to stop over or a central base to visit both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Linlithgow Palace the birth place o Mary Queen of Scots, Hopetoun house and tenement building at Blantyre where David Livingstone spent his youth.
